I'm Blessed

I have always wanted to try gardening.  (Well, maybe not ALWAYS, but I really have wanted to try it.)  For the first couple years of our marriage, it would have been a little bit difficult.  (We lived in a little apartment, so we didn't have our own place to plant a garden.  Granted, we could have probably planted something out at the farm, making it not impossible, but it would have been a little more work.)  When we bought our house, there was actually a really nice, big garden plot already there.  It seemed like a great opportunity to start gardening.  But, I didn't.  When we moved out to the farm 2 years ago, we again had plenty of space, but I still didn't plant anything.  Why not?  I could give a whole list of reasons excuses (I'm really pretty good at that.  Can you tell?) like taking care of a baby/young children, etc.  Mostly though, I didn't really know what I was doing.  We had a garden when I was little, and my mom did some canning, but it was a pretty long time ago now and I really don't remember very much.  Plus, I am notoriously bad about killing plants.  Just ask Randy. :)  This year, I decided that there really isn't a good excuse to not try to do something.  I don't need to plant a gigantic garden and get all crazy, but there is no good reason not to do anything.  A good friend of mine offered to help teach me a little about gardening and canning, and the kids were begging to plant some veggies.  (Who am I to refuse my children fresh vegetables???)  So, we are going to start out with some carrots, peas, beans, tomatoes and a few pumpkins.  We also picked up some blueberry, raspberry and blackberry bushes.  I have been told that the berries can be a little trick to get started, but once they get going they are really fun.  Now, being married to a farmer, it seems like we should be able to do a reasonable job of growing some things without it turning into a complete disaster, so I am really excited!  I am very blessed to have the space and the means to grow some of our own food.  I am very blessed to have friends who are willing to help me learn this process.  I am blessed to have a husband who knows his way around successfully growing things.  I am blessed to have children who are excited to grow and eat healthy food! :)  I really am pretty excited about this new adventure!  (I am sure that the kids and I will be slightly less excited about trying to keep up with the weeds and caring for everything, but I know that it will be a good experience for all of us.)  And when we are enjoying the fruits (and veggies) of our labor, I really believe it will be completely worth the effort! :)
